Temples of Time: Exploring the Forgotten Shrines of Ancient Rajasthan

Rajasthan is frequently recognized for its majestic forts, splendid festivals, and glittering deserts. Beyond this royal splendor, however, lies a treasure trove of ancient temples, which murmur with tales of thousands of years. Forgotten and hidden in quiet villages and isolated forests, these shrines are of immense cultural and historical significance.

Many were sites of worship, sites of enlightenment, and gatherers of communities. Over the years, natural decay, inundation, and human migrations contributed toward many temples becoming less tended to lost entirely. Built in the 11th century, Kiradu temples exhibit amazing craftsmanship in their stone-carving works and are sometimes dubbed the "Khajuraho of Rajasthan" based on the high quality of the sculptures. Despite its astonishing beauty, regular tourist congregations hardly ever visit this temple complex found in largely unsullied surroundings.

Another example of an obscure place is of Harshnath Temple, which is near Sikar. Harshnath Temple is a temple of Shiva and a building believed to have been built around the 10th century and still stands sitting atop a hill which showcases and high oversees the surrounding terrain. Although in ruins, there are spiritual travelers who seek and come here for purity, and fullness, and to escape the chaos of humanity and artificially created surround environments.

Next, you will find the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple in the Alwar District, in the confines of dense Sariska Forest. This temple is accessed via wild trek paths and although you will work hard to reach it, it is worth it. This is a temple built in the early 10th century that stands in celebration of Lord Shiva, awash with age-old beauty and mystery.

Most of these temples were not just functional houses of prayer; they were symbolic of artistry, science, and cosmic cosmology. Their forms are explicit examples of sacred geometry. Their locations often align with astronomical directions. Their carvings tell stories — both of everyday life and from mythological times.

Visiting these forgotten temples is not merely a physical journey through space, but a spiritual journey through time, and a cultural homage to the beliefs and craft work of people hundreds of years earlier than us. They will instinctively engage us to celebrate 'not doing'; to remind us to connect with something bigger than ourselves.

Many people, and also spiritual travellers, are banding together to protect and honour some of these sacred spaces. If we visit them with an open heart, and respect, and learn their stories, and share their stories with others, we can also become apart of their living legacy.
