Spiritual Teachings of Swaminarayan and Their Presence in Gandhinagar

Gujarat has a prominent spiritual tradition and one of the best-known spiritual leaders from this region is Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Born in 1781 in Chhapaiya (now in Uttar Pradesh), he had a significant influence on the history and culture of Gujarat with his life and his teachings. Today in Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat, is the most well-known temple to him, the Akshardham.

As well as being a saint and reformer himself, Swaminarayan shared a simple way of living that upheld discipline and honesty. He traveled throughout India carrying a message of devotion, service and non-violence. His teachings were grounded in love, unity, and purity, and living a life free of addiction, dishonesty and ego.

He supported and uplifted groups such as women, the poor, and the sick. At this time of widespread social injustice, Swaminarayan advocated for equality, education, and a clean way of life. He was involved with the establishment of temples, community centers for social service, and a group of saints who would be devoted to the social, economic and spiritual upliftment of the community and thus continue to share the teachings of Swaminarayan for generations.

Key Spiritual Teachings from Swaminarayan

Here are some main spiritual teachings of Swaminarayan:
Bhakti (devotion): Swaminarayan taught the importance of connecting to God through prayer, chanting, and worship. He believed devotion helped bring about peace in the heart.
Ahimsa (non-violence): He taught kindness to all living beings, asked his followers to be vegetarian, and to live peacefully.
Seva (service): He placed great importance on the idea of helping others as a big part of a spiritual life, saying serving people in a loving way is the same as serving God.
Discipline: True spiritual development comes from living a pure life of honesty, no addictions and the ability to have self-control.
Unity and Harmony: He needed all religions to be treated with respect and shockingly, he wanted people to live together peacefully.

Present in Gandhinagar – The Akshardham Temple

In Gandhinagar, the Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple represents him. The temple is a beautiful pink sandstone temple, as much a place of worship as it is a place of learning and inspiration. The temple represents the teachings of Swaminarayan through exhibitions, spiritual shows, and carefully made carvings. Visitors can experience stories from his life, messages of love and peace, and examples of how his followers have acted on his mission.

The area outside the temple is a calm space where you can meditate and pray. Every evening the water and light show recreates the idea of connecting people to deep spiritual messages in a modern way.

A Living Legacy

The followers of Swaminarayan, particularly through the BAPS (Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha) are alive and well today. The teachings of Swaminarayan are lived by those who walked his path by continuing to contribute through social work and by building schools, hospitals, and temples around the world.

In Gandhinagar, the teachings of Swaminarayan live on their own – not contained or confined within a temple – but are relevant to the way that people live, serve, and pray.

The spiritual teachings of Swaminarayan remind us to live a pure, peaceful, and purpose-driven life. In the heart of Gujarat, Gandhinagar keeps his light shining through Akshardham and the many lives touched by his wisdom. Whether you are a visitor or a local, the presence of Swaminarayan’s spirit can be felt deeply here.
