The Art of Tantra and Kalighat’s Spiritual Legacy

Kalighat is not only a temple in Kolkata with a historic reputation. It is actually one of the most powerful spiritual places in India. Devotees come from many areas of the globe to worship Kali, a fierce and loving Divine Mother. However, Kalighat is more than simply a temple; it has a direct relationship to Tantra, a spiritual path that many people do not understand.

What is Tantra?

When many people hear the word Tantra they think of something secretive or taboo. However, Tantra is simply an ancient spiritual science from India, teaching us to use energy (within the body and the universe) for our spiritual growth. Tantra encompasses much more than rituals. It is a serious, disciplined, devoted, path of self-discovery and development. Tantra mostly develops the divine feminine. For us, Kali is seen to be the highest form of energy-- she destroys the ego and brings about deep transformation. So it is significant that Kalighat is both a temple of Kali but also a place where Tantrik related practices are performed.

Kalighat and Tantra

Kalighat is said to be one of the Shakti Peethas, where parts of Sati's body fell to Earth. Sati's right toe is said to have fell here. Thus Kalighat is beaming with Shakti, or divine energy. The temple in Kalighat is for Tantriks, not just a temple to pray at, but a connection to the raw, unformed energy of the Goddess. Many Tantrik sadhaks (practitioner) have sought meditative solitude here for centuries. Some came for Kali Puja, or for new moon nights, which are particularly strong spiritually.

The rituals in Kalighat are established in many ways. The offerings, the mantras, the way in which devotees will call out to the Goddess, all have deep spiritual significance. They are not just customs, they are ways of awakening energy, and drawing out the inner strength.

A Living Legacy

Even today, you can feel the energy emanating from Kalighat. It is strong whether you are a believer, a seeker, or if you are just curious about this mysterious energy. Some come to seek blessings, some for healing, and some to look deeper inwards.

Tantra is not about fear, nor darkness. It is about facing a truth, the moment of discarding false ideas, and awakening the soul. Kalighat however remains a brilliant flame in this ancient tradition- a place where the practices of Tantra and worship combine.
